Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family that grows abundantly in southern Mexico. In pre-Columbian times they were a main component of the Aztec and Mayan diets and were the basic survival ration of Aztec warriors.

Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.  Chia seeds also provide a good source of fiber and are a great source of protein and calcium for plant based eaters. Chia also provides phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.

Uses:

Chia has a nutlike flavor. You can add it to drinks, smoothies, cereals, etc.. for a really powerful boast of extra nutrition. You can mix seeds in water and add lime or lemon juice and sugar to make a drink known in Mexico and Central America as “chia fresca.”

Dr. Sal’s Thoughts:

I love Chia and add it to my breakfast/workout smoothies and use it in many of my Raw Bar Recipes.  It is one of natures perfect plant based foods giving you a great vegan way to get a good helping of protein, omega 3s and calcium.

You can buy chia seeds at shopOrganic.
